What are the 4 C's?

The 4 C’s stand for Carat, Clarity, Color, and Cut.

Carat is the unit used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones, not size. A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points.’ Diamond price increases with diamond carat weight because larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable.

Clarity refers to how clear a diamond is. It is determined by how many inclusions are inside the diamond. Diamond inclusions are minor imperfections created due to the pressure and heat diamonds experience when forming. Inclusions refer to minute crystals, growth patterns, tiny enclosed fractures, etc. Clarity is measured on a scale from IF (internally flawless) to I2 (included 2). The clearer a diamond is, the rarer and, thus, the higher the price.

Color refers to how clear or yellow a diamond is. Diamonds tend to have a yellowish or brownish tint. Generally, the highest-quality diamonds are colorless, whereas lower-quality diamonds often have a slight yellow tint. The best diamond color grade is D color, meaning the diamond is completely clear with no shade of yellow (or anything else). The scale starts at D (colorless) and goes down to Z (noticeable color). Most diamonds we see in the market are in the D-I range.

Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. The cut is perhaps the most critical characteristic of the 4 C’s and can make or break the appearance of the stone. It is the most complex and technically challenging characteristic to analyze. A diamond with excellent proportions, symmetry, and angles will have optimal light return and be very sparkly. A diamond with poor angles, symmetry, and polish will appear dull and dark.

What is the difference between Carat and Karat?
Down Arrow Icon Minus Icon

A carat is a unit of weight for diamonds and other gemstones.

A karat, when used with gold, is a unit of purity-- 24-karat gold is pure gold. Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole. So if a piece of jewelry is made of metal that is 18 parts gold and 6 parts silver, that is 18-karat gold.
